Who Is God to You?
“May your glorious name be blessed; may it be lifted up above all blessing and praise.” |
In His Holy NameEnhance Your Spiritual Connection through the Power and Meaning of God's Holy NamesThroughout history, God has sought to build strong relationships with His people. Before He sent His Son to earth, He began revealing Himself to mankind. One of the most significant methods He used was sharing His name. Each divine name reveals some quality or characteristic of God. Divine names identify and elevate Him infinitely higher than all other beings, whether in Heaven or on earth.
God’s names emphasize traits and offer promises for our good. Studying God’s divine names is a valuable way to discover and experience unique aspects of His character. We will be drawn into a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father as we identify and embrace these characteristics. Each name God uses for Himself reveals an aspect of His character that helps us know Him better. The noun “God” is a title. The Bible employs various names for God that convey specific, personal meaning and identity. The meanings behind God’s names reveal His fundamental personality and nature to us. |
Throughout scripture, God reveals Himself to us through His nearly 1000 names. God’s names are descriptions of His character and nature, and there is nothing so powerful as the name of God. The Bible declares that “the name of the Lord is like a strong tower; the righteous person runs to it and is set safely on high.”
When Jesus declared: “I have come in my Father’s name,” he was stating that he came with his Father’s authority, but an added meaning to that statement is that he came to manifest his Father’s character. Jesus portrayed the Father to such a degree that he could say: “The Father and I are one.” and “the person who has seen me has seen the Father.” The words that Jesus spoke were the words his Father gave him to speak, and the works that he did were those given to him by the Father.
No one name could ever reveal the entire nature of God, but in the Bible, God reveals himself through many names. Each one of His names is used to indicate another distinct part of his character and nature.
So, who is God to you?
Is He Ēlohim, your Most High God,
Jehovah Shalom, the Lord of Peace,
Ēl Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One,
Jehovah Jireh, the Lord Who Will Provide,
Adonai, the Lord Over All,
Jehovah Raah, the Lord our Shepherd?
To hallow a thing is to make it holy, to set it apart to be exalted and worthy of absolute devotion. To hallow the name of God is to regard Him with complete devotion and loving admiration. We should preserve His name in a position of solemn significance in our hearts and minds. We should rejoice in it and think deeply about its true meaning.
Jesus told us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” An excellent way to practice that daily is to know God’s very character through the power of His name. When we search and study the names that He reveals to us in the Bible, we will better understand who God really is.
God’s names, character, and nature remain the same throughout generations. He is entirely trustworthy, all-powerful, eternally loving, and constantly present. We can find hope in His mighty name if we need reassurance and greater faith today. He is the God of miracles. Nothing is impossible for Him.
